This day sucked! The 415x4x10 was terrible...in a good way. I was so gassed, add the fact that I had the asthma going bad this evening and it was a smokeshow.
Sheaf felt...OK at best. Still need to give my neck time. I am going to try to add it in at least twice a week so the bones and connective tissue have time to adapt before going max effort during contest. Tomorrow will be a low volume press day and saturday will be low volume conditioning.

Still trying to get back into it after a week off and moving around...oh yeah, I got married too. I can tell too, because my lifts feel as shit does.
Basically the plan is to implement a block periodization program for the next 4-6 months. Hopefully it will get me where I need to be when I start specific training for the throws sometime in March. I will continue to do drills off and on, but this block cycle is for maximal strength and power. The accumulation phase will consist of 2 main days in a 7 day period. A day for upper (today) and a day for lower (thursday) Monday, Wednesday, and Friday will be devoted to general strengthening/conditioning/recovery. I won't change too much from normal except that I will now do a smaller loaded lower day on monday instead of the high load upper I was doing, High load upper is on tuesday, wednesday will be recovery day thursday is high load lower, friday is low load upper and saturday is conditioning/recovery. Each low load day will also incorporate more conditioning and recovery work. This phase will last for 8 weeks. I intend to load my two main days much like today using low repetitions performed over many sets at a fairly high intensity. Today was 70% 4x10 next week will be something like 75% 4x10 and so on. The focus here is to accumulate a large strength and conditioning reserve which will be drawn upon during restitution block which will lend itself to building the strength gained in accumulation into speed and power for the throws.

Needless to say, I'm pretty pissed, but that's not going to help me recover any faster. I'll take this next week very very conservative on the lower body nonsense. I may do a push-pull upper body split this week just for shits and giggles and to keep my mind of this stupid knee bullshit.

Good day, the deadlift went well, I was pretty much to failure off the floor on my last rep of 525. I like this system for pulling. I'll basically keep increasing my weight each week and decrease the number of singles I pull. The whole reason I'm doing this is to better my pull from the floor. I'll keep squatting on tuesdays and then will rotate my assistance exercises around to help my goals.

I've slowly started to build back up, my neck can take more and more, so I'm starting to shift the voices in my head from "It's ok to stop, you don't want to hurt yourself more" to "Don't be a pussy! you can do 10 more reps, you aren't even walking funny yet!" I don't like that second voice in my head, but he's smart the majority of the time...the trick is knowing which to listen to and when. Still learning that one...so is Bryan "Death Ankle" Benzel

I measured my best throw and it was just absolutely terrible, so bad I'm almost ashamed to put it on here...but looking at it another way, nowhere to go but up. (35') I wish the font would go smaller so I wouldn't have to look at it, but it is what it is and it is a starting place. This is really just a technique issue so I'm looking to steadily improve this over the next 3-6 months with a goal of 50 feet by the end of March.

Trained at Jesse's, it was a great day, good to see the guys again. I tried to throw the WOB but it killed my neck. It's very frustrating, but I know that I just need to keep taking it easy and letting this heal. The doc said I would be back close to now, but then again, I don't think he understands just how much force this bone has to take. I have taken the McPhearson games off my calendar, no sense pushing it and then being hurt for the offseason. I'll just continue to gradually improve and do what I can. I can throw shot now, so I'll work that a ton and see where it gets me.

It's very frustrating, but I know that I just need to keep taking it easy and letting this heal. The doc said I would be back close to now, but then again, I don't think he understands just how much force this bone has to take. I have taken the McPhearson games off my calendar, no sense pushing it and then being hurt for the offseason. I'll just continue to gradually improve and do what I can. I can throw shot now, so I'll work that a ton and see where it gets me.

Great day, Troy and I threw shot at the park before this. I wasn't sure if my neck would take it, but it was no problem. I threw the 12 and had zero pain. I topped at probably 80% power just to be sure that my neck wouldn't be killing me tomorrow. I stepped out my farthest throw and it was around 47 feet. Nothing to get real excited about, except for the fact that I could actually get out and throw with now pain!

Great day, Good to be back at the Steel Jungle, I missed it. Neck is feeling better, still in some pain post workout but it isn't too bad. I am pleased with my pull, 405 felt really light today, but I still can't use any upper back at lockout and I definitely felt it on the 500 pulls. I've decided to do some sort of finisher/challenge after each workout. I'll keep track of these, most often I'll time the entire challenge and then try to beat that time next time I do it. That way if I'm looking for something short to do for extra, I can just check back at my challenges and I'll have an instant workout and time goal.

Still getting better.
I can do more and more things now without pain. I still can't hold a shot up next to my neck, but I am able to get my arms completely up overhead (Can't press yet) and have been able to carry a bag over one shoulder. I'm still not going to push throwing, I'll try to catch the tail end of august with some throws before I decide if McPhearson is even in the picture.
Yesterday I trained near Sarah's home in the sandhills at their high school gym. It isn't much, but I was able to deadlift 315 for 2 sets of 5 which I was pretty excited about and then I did some other odds and ends. I supersetted 135 floor press with fat man rows and ended with physio ball knee ins. I know, it's fitness industry stuff, but it's all I can do right now, plus I'm working areas that I need to bring up for throwing.
Today I did some more this and that. I was able to do some KB work with some pain, but nothing too excruciating. I worked intervals today work:rest of 50:10 KB complex, divebomber pushups, core band presses, sledgehammer (gently with obliques this still hurt some), crab walk reaches, and jump rope.
I can feel myself starting to get very frustrated with this and it is very difficult for me to keep telling myself that it's going to take time.

Tonight, on unsolved mysteries...find out who gives a shit about bigfoot...
It has been a while since I posted. I've been busy. I've had a few highland games contests come and go, and have been progressively getting better. However, recently I've hit quite the roadblock...
This isn't my x-ray, but that's what it would look like.
I was doing the sheaf toss at a games in SD and was throwing for 28 feet. When I dipped down to throw and pulled up I felt a gross crunch in my neck and then it felt like somebody stabbed a knife in it. I couldn't even hold the fork with the bag on it to go for another throw, believe me, I tried. I did, however manage (incredibly) to complete the caber toss after that. I thought that maybe I just torqued a vertebrae and it just needed some time to fix itself, but it didn't get any better and the first 4 days after the contest I couldn't even get my hands high enough to wash my hair. So I went in and this is what we discovered. Apparently when I dipped to pull the bag up for the toss, my traps contracted so hard they snapped my spinous process in half. Awesome! So now, I have to wear a sweet cervical collar which we are promptly going to paint black and put skulls on. I can however train things that don't make my neck hurt, which isn't much since you contract your upper back for pretty much everything awesome in the gym.
I did bench yesterday since I can't do any overhead. I tried to go for 225, but it smashed my neck into the bench, so I decided to do 135 for 100 in as many sets as it took. Halfway through I figured out that if I hang my head and neck off the bench, I can do it relatively pain free, I'll try that next time and see if I can go any heavier that way. I finished my bench and supersetted it with weighted leg raises, grip work, and hammer curls.
Today I hit some belt squat which I can already tell are going to be my savior. Here is a picture of my belt squat setup. The only bad thing is that when you get heavy, and it's a hot day, the tire really sinks in and sometimes it's hard to walk it back to the edge.
I managed to work up to 450 for 2 sets of 5 and then hit 275 for 2 sets of 10.
My plan is to just alternate days of upper and lower, basically whatever I can handle, I'll do. I won't be able to do anything that hurts my neck for the next 4-6 weeks until this fracture heals.
This year has just been the shits for me as far as injuries go, but I'll come back from this one no problem, just a bump in the road on the way to another bridge to cross. I'm looking forward to getting back to the Lincoln-Omaha area and training with the guys (however limited it may be)
I'm still crossing my fingers that I'll be back in time for MacPhearson games. I calculated my scores from my last contest and based on that, if nobody else changes, I should be ranked close to 13th in the amateur class, which isn't bad for my first year of throwing. I know I can improve my throws with more reps and practice, so my goal for next year at this time is to be top 10.
Sorry to everybody who reads this for not posting all summer, but it was nice to just get back to basics and not care about anything but training. I'll post from here out even though it may be dry since I apparently can only do bench and belt squats.

Highlands in the 'burg
This was a fun games for me, the best part was that it wasn't a muddy crap hole like we have been throwing in for the last 4 weeks.
I wasn't really happy with how the Braemar stone went, I just don't feel like I'm getting any big push on it. I know the distance is good, but I just feel like it hasn't clicked yet.
We left at 4:15 AM, got there around 8:30, and started warmups.

The open stone was the first time I've tried the south african spin technique. I like it, but it needs work. After watching the video, I know what I need to change to throw some big numbers. This is still a 3 foot PR.
Heavyweight went well, it's starting to come along. I've changed some technique things on this, but the main thing is not scratching my weight throws. I'm lucky my best throw counted on both light and heavy or I would have been SOL. This was a 3' 8" PR, so I'll take that any day!
Lightweight was good. I was a bit disappointed, I really wanted to hit 70 this contest. Again, I scratched 2 of my throws. This was a 4' PR. 4 more and I'll be over 70!
Heavy hammer went much better this time. This was a huge contest PR. Watching video has shown some glaring technique issues though, same with light hammer. Heavy was a 10' PR and Light was a 1' PR.
Caber is something I need work at. This was the very first time I've ever tried a caber...ever. I just wanted to turn it, and on my third attempt I did! It wasn't pretty, or accurate, but it was a turn. So PR for me!!!
Sheaf didn't go very well. I was having technique issues again, I know I'm new to this and should be patient, but I don't like having technique problems. If it's just a strength or speed issue, I'm ok with that, but technique is something I need to get fixed. 26' with a 16# sheaf was good enough for last place. But on the bright side, since I've never done it with a 16# sheaf....Instant PR!
Weight for height is by far my best event. I changed my technique around a bit and didn't waste energy at lower heights and this made for a good 6 inch PR. I feel like I'm really close to 17' 6" and hope to hit that at the next games.
All in all it was a great time. I got 8 PRs for my birthday, I'll take that any day!

Great day. Everybody was hitting it hard. Jesse and I trained for a solid 5 hours today. I think we both needed it. It was a good day for the steel jungle crew. I forgot how much fun sundays were. We'll see how my body feels during this week of training. Throwing went ok, it was a sloppy mess. We just about needed a shovel to get the shot out of the ground. Good times.

Joe showed up big on some stuff, some stuff he needed some extra pushing and ridiculing to do. Troy was solid as always and just keeps improving. Corey looked good as well. It was a good day for the steel jungle crew. I forgot how much fun sundays were. We'll see how my body feels during this week of training. Throwing went ok, it was a sloppy mess. We just about needed a shovel to get the shot out of the ground. Good times.
I just drank more in my shake than most people eat in an entire day.

I would like to get up to 600 in the next few months and feel that with some good solid training this shouldn't be too much of a problem. 575 felt solid, but I came forward out of the hole and lost it. This is just a factor of not having much heavy training in the squat for a while. Technique!

Throwing went well for me today, I think I made a breakthrough on my WFD. I ended up throwing 36 on my HW but stepped out of the trig, and hit 73 on my LW. I was super excited until we weighed it and it was 24lbs. Ha ha, but still, I don't think 4 pounds should make a 10' difference. Just have to keep improving. I'm thinking about seeing how push press would feel on my knee...Maybe I'll try a few sets on thursday to see.

Pretty happy with how deadlift went today after the first sets felt like ass and I had to strap up like a bitch on my second set. My goal is to only strap up for my last set and not use straps for anything else (Jesse would interject something about hook grip here blah blah blah, but I hate the hook grip). I think they, along with wrist wraps were contributing to my extreme wrist pain. I bumped it the other night and just about flipped out of bed it hurt so bad...it's not like a "zing" pain and done...it throbbed like a mother fucker for at least 5 minutes.

Trained with Troy at UNL Campus. We thought that since it was 9pm on a friday, there wouldn't be anybody there...we were wrong. Plenty of douches to go around and make fun of. We really worked on getting Troy low enough on the squat. He has quite the mental block when he gets down in the hole. Just something he has to be consistant with and work hard on. Other than that, it was a pretty intense session.

It was my press deload, so I tried not to do much stuff...not sure if it worked or not. Tomorrow is squat! I'm pretty sure I am going to do the quad city strongman contest in march. I push pressed today up to 265 so the event I'm most worried about with my knee is the press medley. It goes up to 285 on the log, so I should be able to work to that pretty easily. I'm still having a lot of rotational instability that is worrying me on the explosive pressing events. I've found that if I stagger my steps before I press, it isn't as bad, so that may be my go to pressing style now. I'm also thinking of getting some olympic shoes so I can be cool like Jesse.

On my later sets with 455 I had to resort to a few reps of each set over-under...I need to train grip more. I have been doing some fat grip work at the end of workouts to see if that helps. Jesse gave me a Jack's Pizza to try, for the money, it was pretty damn good. I made the whole thing and folded it in half calzone style. Not a bad post training meal.

Not bad. My wrist really flared up bad today. I couldn't use straps so I figured I'd give hook grip a go. It really limited my pull so I was disappointed in the reps, but it is a hook grip PR and if it will get Jesse to shut up about hook gripping, then it isn't a total loss...ha ha, knowing he reads this...I'm sure I'll get some shit. I think that I need to do more volume on my deadlift days. I'm thinking about dropping down after my top set each week and hitting something like 10x2 or a 5x5 just to get some extra work. These will probably be dead stop each rep.
I hope I can get everything healed up soon...being beat up sucks
On a side note, I got a cake pan for christmas that makes cakes into the shape of a donut...but like 10 times the size of a regular donut. I call it the Mac Cake

Good day! I wasn't real happy with my deadlift. I wanted 10, but 8 will have to do. I've decided to start keeping track of where those reps would put me for a max and go for PRs that way. I need reps to shoot for and hopefully this will be less ambiguous than "Max Reps". The tabata suckata-ed today, I've been sick in the lungs for a few days and this didn't help. I need to get the intensity back in my training...it's going to start with getting my knee's back to normal.

Catch up
It's just been a bit crazy these past few weeks. Lets see...here's a bit of a run down.
First I was de-loading. Before that I hit 575 on the box squat, and during de-load I did 240 on the Military press, not great, but it is what it is. Following the de-load I've just been following the plan. Not much to report, I'm still in the 8-10 range on most of my lifts, which is good. I did 480 for 10 on a day when 225 felt more like 522 and I was convinced that either Jesse's weights didn't weigh what they said, or I was losing my mind because the right side felt 25 pounds heavier than the left. I'll chalk it up to a moment of psychotic mental duress. Not much of a catch up, but whatever...

Not bad, I trained at the campus rec with Sarah. I didn't get to Troy's this week which sucked, but I'll get out there soon I hope. My right knee has been giving me troubles, I tested push press on thursday and it was really buckling when I was pressing. I tried 135 today with my knee brace on and it felt pretty solid. Maybe I'll just have to keep that on during explosive press movements from here on until I can get the money to get it fixed, and the timing worked out.

I dare you to try to watch it without having your nuts jump up into your stomach...or for you females out there...having your ovaries tied in a knot.
